O'Grady lived in Wheaton, Illinois, and attended the North High School of Wheaton in 1981. She is the daughter of Jan O'Grady (a finance planner) as well as Jim O'Grady. Her family raised her by their parents in Wheaton in Illinois and graduated in 1981 with a diploma from the Wheaton North High School. She appeared as a model in commercials for a time before moving out to Los Angeles. O'Grady's early career was as a Montgomery Ward model, where she also appeared in a variety of commercials.
